Why offer meal vouchers to your employees

In Luxembourg, meal vouchers are an employee benefit benefiting from favorable tax treatment: the employer's contribution is deductible from charges and exempt (within legal limits) from social security contributions, which makes this benefit more advantageous than its equivalent in gross salary.

For the employee, meal vouchers represent real purchasing power with reduced taxation. It is a particularly effective loyalty and attractiveness tool in a very competitive Luxembourg labor market.

The ceiling on the face value of the exempt meal voucher is set by Luxembourg regulations. Fidustra ensures that the implementation is compliant and correctly integrated into the management of pay slips.

Advantages of meal vouchers

  • Partial exemption from social contributions
  • Deductible from the company's taxable income
  • Benefit perceived positively by employees
  • Digital solution (cards) or paper available
  • Flexible face value according to HR policy
  • Integrable into Fidustra payroll management

The Luxembourg legal framework

In Luxembourg, lunch vouchers are regulated to benefit from advantageous tax treatment. The conditions to be respected are as follows:

One check per day of work — the ticket cannot exceed one per day actually worked.

Maximum face value — beyond a certain amount, the excess portion becomes taxable. This ceiling is set by the Luxembourg tax administration.

Mandatory employee participation — the employee must contribute a minimum amount to the value of the check for the mechanism to be valid.

Strictly food use — meal vouchers cannot be used outside of meals (alcohol, tobacco, non-food products excluded).

Deductible from company expenses — the employer contribution is an operating expense deductible from taxable income.
